New Year's Resolutions 2017.

With 2016 drawing to a near, it's a time to reflect and focus on our goals and aspirations for the coming year. Maybe there is something you'd like to achieve, a place you'd like to visit or something you'd like to try. Whatever it may be, now is the perfect time to jot down those ideas and dreams as we welcome 2017 and a whole host of new adventures and opportunities. I have made a list of resolutions for 2017, but rather than having a very long list (which sometimes can feel like a mammoth task) I have condensed it down into more manageable chunks and therefore more likely to stick to.

Christmas with Wrendale Designs.

Ashbourne, Derbyshire.
Christmas with Wrendale Designs - Elizabeth Anne
During the festive season when all the house is decorated and the fairy lights are twinkling, I have an armchair in the living room or as I call my "snug" is swathed with cosy blankets and Christmas cushions and from here, I can curl up with a good book, watch a movie, write my Christmas cards and generally hibernate keeping topped up with freshly baked mince pies and mugs of hot chocolate sprinkled with marshmallows. It is the most comfortable and cosy armchair. When I'm in my snug, I like to prepare my Christmas evening by stocking up on drinks and nibbles. I'll gather the necessities such as stamps, pens, wrapping paper, gift tags, ribbons and so on then snuggle down with a Christmas movie or listen to carols. It's one of the many ways I enjoy a cosy winter evening. Although the iconic poet John Clare sums up my Christmas evenings (except its a dog, not a cat):

Favourite Winter lipsticks.

Left to right: Maybelline - Midnight Plum | Rimmel London - Wine 107 | MAC - Brave Red | GOSH - Twilight | Maybelline - Divine Wine

During the winter months, where lipstick is concerned, I tend to reach for darker shades such as deep plums or berry reds pared with a simple eye makeup look or a smoky eye during in the evening. I decided to put this post together showcasing my most reached for lipsticks and hopefully serve as inspiration to try a darker shade of lipstick or perhaps a shade you're undecided about. Planning for Christmas with Busy B.

Planning for Christmas with Busy B - Elizabeth Anne

Planning for Christmas with Busy B - Elizabeth Anne

Busy B Christmas Planner | £14.99* (Link).

With Christmas approaching, it is never too early to start preparing and making plans. At such a busy time of the year, it can become stressful with selecting the perfect gifts, writing out cards and baking festive treats however, the key to a smooth and stress-free Christmas is to plan and prepare early which in turn saves time which can be used for relaxing and enjoying the festivities. When it comes to planning for Christmas, I can make lots of lists from food and gifts to Christmas cards and general things to do such as preparing the rooms for our guests and so on but with lots of fiddly bits of paper, they can become muddled or worse: lost.

Christmas at Castle Howard | Photo diary.

Castle Howard, York.
Christmas at Castle Howard - Elizabeth Anne
Warning - Photo heavy. Please allow time for photos to load.

As the festive season is almost upon us, it's time to welcome our homes to Christmas cheer. Adorn the windows with evergreens, the festive aroma of oranges and cinnamon drift lazily through the home, the sound of cheerful music and Christmas carols and admiring flickering candles by the fireside. Christmas is a magical and heart-warming time of the year; enjoying the seasonal festivities with loved ones and indulging in the delights of wholesome cooking, country walks or cosy evenings playing games. One of my favourite seasonal pursuits is to visit stately homes during the holiday season and revel in the delights of magnificent grandeur and festive décor. I was delighted to be invited along to the awe-inspiring Castle Howard. Situated near York, Castle Howard is one of Britain's finest stately homes. A truly magnificent historic house in the north of England set within 1000 acres of landscaped gardens including lakes, fountains, temples, woodland and a walled garden, a superb example of ambitious and artistic architecture with ornate décor and a 300 year old history of the Howard family woven into the fibers of the stately home.

Go Outdoors Nottingham store opening.

Arnold, Nottingham.
Go Outdoors - Elizabeth Anne
One of my favourite poets of the 19th century is John Clare. Considered to be one of Britain's most iconic and important poets, Clare was known for his descriptive poems of rural life and scenery. When Clare was asked about his poetry and inspirations, he merely replied; "I found the poems in the fields and only wrote them down." In the same respect a lot of my inspiration for blogging comes from the English countryside; from the patchwork-like fields stitched together by hedgerows and dry stone walling to the wondrous wildlife and the fine flora and fauna. Having been imbued with a sense of admiration and affection I find myself spending a lot of my time outdoors in the charming countryside and thus require practical clothing and footwear.

Sleek Makeup - Elizabeth Anne
I relish shopping for makeup. Everything from exploring the various stands, pretty packaging, choosing a shade(s) and best of all when there is an offer available. Instantly I picked up the Solstice Highlighting Palette and the I-Divine Eyeshadow Palette in Goodnight Sweetheart.

Autumnal Fashion for Country Walks - Elizabeth Anne
There is nothing more tranquil and idyllic than taking a mindful walk in the countryside admiring the breathtakingly beautiful views combined with the changing seasons. I can find the same spot stood on a particular country lane gazing out into the distance different even though I have seen it many times but due the changing seasons I find it fascinating. From the patchwork-like fields trimmed with crimson red berry hedgerows to glorious birdsong and the crisp chill in the air: I adore the countryside.

Little beauty and lifestyle haul.

Ashbourne, Derbyshire.
Beauty and Lifestyle Haul - Elizabeth Anne
A while ago I went on a little shopping spree and I thought you might enjoy having a look at what I purchased. First up is Maybelline - vivid matte liquid in the shades "Nude Trill" and "Possessed Plum." I have always been a fan of Maybelline and was the first brand I ever purchased from when I was growing up into a young woman and starting to experiment with makeup. The vivid matte liquids come in 6 different shades from natural nudes to bright corals and deep plums to pretty pinks and they are currently on offer at Superdrug buy one get one half price. I have been using these regularly and I am delighted with the results. Very creamy and velvety smooth but don't dry the lips like other matte lip products. Nude Trill is a lovely natural shade that looks beautiful with a smoky eye and Possessed Plum is a deep vampy shade that makes a statement.

Rituals | The Ritual of Karma body cream & shower oil - Review.

Rituals Karma Collection - Elizabeth Anne

Rituals | The Ritual of Karma - Body Cream (£19.50) & Shower Oil (£8.50)*

New to the Rituals range is "the ritual of karma." Ancient Hindu belief claims that living with good intent attracts positive karma. In essence, say good words; think good thoughts; do good deeds and good will come your way. I believe in this and always try to do a good deed a day: be it holding the door open for someone or giving a compliment. The collection from Rituals comprises of: shower foam, body cream, body scrub, shower oil, fragrance sticks and a candle. Featuring the sweet floral aroma of white holy lotus and refreshing bergamot; it makes this the most luxurious bath time treat and perfect for a well deserved pamper session. The scent is light which is great for those who do not like overpowering aromas. The packaging features a cool aqua green shade which I find refreshing and calming topped with copper accents. This is defiantly luxury skin care.

Photo Diary | Weybourne.

Weybourne, Holt.
Photo Diary Weybourne - Elizabeth Anne
From the picture-perfect stone cottages adored with typical cottage garden flowers to fresh local seafood, North Norfolk is one of my favourite places. A truly quintessentially English coastland intertwined with beautiful countryside. Personally speaking, it's the best of both worlds. You may have noticed from my Instagram that a few weeks ago I stayed in the beautiful village of Weybourne. Interestingly over the years it's spelling has changed from "Wauborn" and "Wauburne" in 1610 and "Weyburn" in 1927 however, the name we know today "Weybourne" comes from John Marius Wilson, "Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales", (1870). The tranquil village is around 4 miles from Holt, a gorgeous Georgian town and a short 10 minutes walk to the beach is the perfect retreat. Its everything you would expect from a pretty English village... a local village shop supplying fresh produce including free range eggs and Norfolk pink potatoes from Breck Farm situated 1 mile away, a pub, a tearoom serving fresh cakes and tea, a church and an abundance of pretty pastel and thatched-roofed cottages.

A mini guide to self care.

Mini Guide to Self Care - Elizabeth Anne
Self care. Two little words but such an important part of our lives. Self care is defined as "care of the self without any medical intervention" according to Oxford Dictionary, 2016 however, I don't feel that this definition does this term much justice. While it provides the reader with an understanding, it does not explore and encompass the whole meaning. So what exactly is 'self care'? For me, it is spending time and taking care of oneself in a non-judgmental and selfless way, understanding and attending to the needs of the mind and the body. Think of this as a gift to yourself. In a world that is fast pace, we can sometimes neglect ourselves and can result in feeling 'burnt out.' I have put this mini guide together with some ideas and tips on self care for the mind and body and I hope you find it useful (you could add this to your favourites or bookmark this page so you can always find it when you need). There are lots of books, apps and websites full of different techniques which is fantastic but I am hoping to keep this post simple and inspiring. So keep reading if you'd like some useful tips and ideas.

Recipe | Puppy breakfast bites.

Ashbourne, Derbyshire.
Puppy Breakfast Bites - Elizabeth Anne
For the little puppy in your life, these little breakfast bites are nutritious, healthy, easy and quick to make but importantly, a much cheaper alternative as they use ingredients found in your kitchen pantry (some dog recipes require more specialist ingredients which can become pricey). The recipe makes a batch of 24 breakfast bites. I like to keep these fresh by storing them in Tupperware. I half the batch by putting some in the freezer so I always have some ready to hand.
Ben adores these little breakfast bites! He has one in a morning but can also be used as a pre-bedtime supper for your pooch.

Our photographs are preserved memories and when our busy schedules allow, we can revel in the moments and relive them. 30 Days Wild | Day twenty nine - Watch the clouds.

Watch the Clouds - Elizabeth Anne
Turn your gaze towards the heavens and watch the fluffy clouds float by. In today's modern life, we can easily access information on the weather forecast from television programs, radio stations and apps therefore, plan what to wear and any social plans that may be affected. However, have you thought how people used to forecast the weather? Before technology became so prominent in our lives, we used to turn our gaze towards the clouds as certain shapes would foretell the weather. This was a vital skill that people relied on. However, in present day, we tend to make out pretty shapes and gaze dreamily at the little cotton fluff balls. Although wouldn't it be boring staring up at a cloudless sky? So for 30 Days Wild, why not lie back and watch the clouds float by?

30 Days Wild | Day twenty eight - Identify a wild flower.

Identify a Wildflower - Elizabeth Anne
Wild flowers are abundant throughout our countryside, from hedgerows to woodlands and roadsides to gardens. I love walking through the countryside and seeing wild blooms unfurling their petals and turning their faces towards the sunshine. There are lots of resources to help you identify a wild flower, including books, websites and apps. So next time you're out walking, take time to observe the wild flowers around you.

30 Days Wild | Day twenty seven - Draw and colour the countryside.

Colour the Countryside - Elizabeth Anne
Many artists seek inspiration from the countryside from fauna to flora. One such lady from the Edwardian era named Edith Holden created the Country Diary of the Edwardian Lady, which in 1906 recorded her words and illustrations of the changing seasons in the English countryside. Beautifully depicting soft watercolour illustrations and poetic writing make this a truly wonderful book. So for 30 Days Wild, why not gather your pens and pencils and enjoy the relaxing benefits of drawing and colouring?

30 Days Wild | Day twenty six - Go strawberry picking.

Strawberry Picking - Elizabeth Anne
The quintessential art of strawberry picking has long since been imprinted on our British consciousness with many historical references dating back to Medieval times when newlyweds enjoyed strawberries with borage and soured cream, for their wedding breakfast believing them to have aphrodisiac properties, however, the strawberry's earliest reference was in Roman times around 200BC. A quote by the 17th century English writer Dr. William Butler, aptly describes the berry, "doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did."

30 Days Wild | Day twenty five - Watch and listen to birds.

Birdwatch - Elizabeth Anne
There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a bird hopping cheerfully around your garden or perched on a feeder helping themselves to seed and nuts. I try to keep the feeders in our garden topped up (especially throughout the winter when food can be scarce) and gives me a warm feeling when I see birds flutter into the garden for their breakfast/lunch/dinner. I do enjoy spotting birds (and getting quite good at naming them!) and where I live has a good mix of wild birds including our resident Mr and Mrs pheasant, robins, blackbirds, crows and rooks, blue tits, magpies, herons, great tits, pied wagtails but there are too many to list but nevertheless are beautiful and a pleasure to see. One of my favourite poems by John Clare 'The Skylark' has a wonderful description of their nesting habits and is aptly put: "had they the wing, like such a bird, themselves would be too proud, and build on nothing but a passing cloud."

Friday, 24 June 2016

30 Days Wild | Day twenty four - Practice mindfulness in the countryside.

Practice Mindfulness - Elizabeth Anne
Ever thought of practising mindfulness outdoors? You don't have to go far, you could simply sit in your garden. Being outdoors (preferably somewhere peaceful) is a great way to practice mindfulness and becoming aware of the present moment. There are many definitions and descriptions of 'mindfulness' and can be a little confusing, however, put simply, it is the awareness of ourselves and the world around us. There are many books, apps and websites devoted to becoming mindful (I have listed a few of my favourites below) and techniques you can employ throughout the day, whether you have 5 minutes or a luxurious whole afternoon to spare.

30 Days Wild | Day twenty three - Pick wild flowers.

Kniveton, Ashbourne.
Pick Wild Flowers - Elizabeth Anne
There is something relaxing and therapeutic about picking and collecting wild flowers, the end result of a pitcher jug filled with blooms standing proudly in your home as a reminder of the walk in the countryside.

30 Days Wild | Day twenty two - Visit a farm shop.

Chatsworth House, Bakewell.
Farm Shop - Elizabeth Anne
Saviour the delights of fresh produce, wholesome foods and tasty treats at your local farm shop. All the products are sourced locally (so you know purchasing will help local businesses and farmers) and they have a fantastic variety, from fresh fruit and vegetables to scrumptious cakes and savory tarts. Personally, I love visiting our farm shop as they have so much to choose from and I think tastes far better. If I am going to cook or bake something extra special, this will be the first place I head to.
